May 12, 2013

Experience collectors, it’s about time to explore southern Santorini’s hidden gems and enjoy magnificent landscapes blending with history and architecture!

Begin your hike with a visit to Prophet Elias Monastery, which is built on the highest peak of the island, perched at an altitude of around 565 meters above the sea level. From up there, the panoramic 3 dimensional view of the entire island, the beautiful whitewashed villages and the caldera, surrounded by infinite blue sea and the nearby islands Ios, Folegandros and Sikinos, will blow your mind!

Continue your tour to Megalochori, a small village for high expectations, where Vedema, your 5 star hotel Santorini is situated! Stroll around the cobbled alleys, enjoy the picturesque architecture and the scent arising from the flowery yards, as well as the impressive bell towers that pop up harmoniously in the landscape.
Head southeast and time travel in Emborio village, the entry to another, past era! The small whitewashed houses carved in the rocks and the narrow alleys compose a unique architecture, lively and originally illustrating the past. The quaint architecture as well as the natives’ characteristic dialect dignify the uniqueness of this village.

It’s past midday and temperature has raised, time for a refreshing sea dip in the nearby beaches of Perivolos or Perissa. After your revitalizing stop, choose a small tavern along the coast to savor fresh fish and the local cuisine and wine.

Continue your drive to Akrotiri, the excavation site of a Minoan Bronze Age settlement which was buried by the widespread Theran eruption in the middle of the second millennium BC and is remarkably well-preserved. Thanks to its excellent state of preservation and the wealth of finds it has yielded, it is the most important prehistoric settlement found in the Eastern Mediterranean and could be characterized as the Pompeii of the Aegean.

Late in the evening, find yourselves in a good spot in Akrotiri or Pyrgos Kallistis, to cherish the dramatic sunset of the island!
